The Importance of Choosing the Right Kitchen Flooring

Choosing the right type of flooring that can withstand the demands of a busy kitchen while complementing your overall design is really important. Whether you’re looking to enhance the aesthetic appeal, increase functionality, or simply give your kitchen a fresh new look, the advice below will help you confidently navigate the decision-making process.

Pros and Cons of Different Kitchen Flooring Options

Let’s take a close look at some of the most popular types of flooring:

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles)

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) are our favourite flooring type and are the most practical choice for any kitchen. LVTs have gained immense popularity in recent years due to their durability, versatility, and affordability. As such, you may have heard of Moduleo, Karndean, Luvanto, Palio and Amtico, which are all leading manufacturers of LVTs for a good reason. They provide excellence and the ability to choose any design, from ‘out there’ to traditional, bold to subtle.

Vinyl

For practicality alone, it’s worth taking a close look at vinyl flooring. Vinyl flooring is a roll product, coming as one sheet of product, just like carpet. It is by far one of the most affordable flooring options, yet incredibly durable, water resistant, cleanable, and has some beautiful designs that do not disappoint. Vinyl is also the most affordable way to transform any kitchen area.

Tile (Ceramic tiles/tiling)

Next up is ceramic tiling, a classic choice for kitchens. They’re easy-clean, with a water-resistant surface and available in many different styles and colours. There’s a tile floor to fit every kitchen in every home. Porcelain and natural stone tiles have a durable nature. However, it should be noted that some tile materials tend to chip easily when heavy objects are dropped on them.

Another downside is that they can be quite chilly during wintertime. Thankfully, most tile materials are suitable for underfloor heating, stone and ceramic are more thermally conductive flooring materials than most. Some of the tile materials are harder than others, making them less comfy to walk on for prolonged periods, despite their easy clean nature.

Laminate

If price is a priority, this flooring type is an affordable option. Laminate flooring offers a cost-effective alternative to hardwood while mimicking real wood’s look and feel. Our favourite laminate brand is Quickstep.

Be aware that laminate will require an expansion gap around the perimeters. You’ll need to find a suitable laminate as certain ranges are vulnerable to water damage (even a small puddle of water can cause some inferior laminate floors to warp if left there for a long period of time.) As such, these may not be the best choice for a room where spills are common.

Engineered Wood

For homeowners and landlords seeking the timeless beauty of hardwood with enhanced durability, engineered wood flooring is a compelling choice. Hardwood is certainly one of the oldest types of flooring to use in a kitchen, is highly durable and gives you a classic look that will withstand the test of time.

Engineered wood is composed of multiple layers, so it handles moisture/humidity far better than solid wood and is able to be installed in new build homes. The beautiful top layer of real wood can help to make you feel at one with nature.

Carpets

A soft, luxurious carpet is not the best choice in a room where water, food and feet all come together. We recommend using more practical and durable flooring options in kitchens, such as tiles, vinyl, laminate, or hardwood. These materials are easier to clean, maintain and offer better resistance to spills, stains, and wear in the kitchen environment.

Which Flooring Materials Are Best for Easy Maintenance in the Kitchen?

Kitchen floors are subjected to spills, stains, and heavy foot traffic, making easy maintenance a top priority. Tiles, vinyl, and laminate are among the best flooring materials for easy maintenance in the kitchen.

Tiles are durable, stain resistant, and easy to clean. They can withstand spills, heat, and heavy foot traffic. Vinyl flooring is water-resistant, low-maintenance, and available in a wide range of designs. It can be easily wiped clean and is resistant to stains. Laminate flooring is also durable, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean with regular sweeping or vacuuming.

These materials offer practicality, durability, and the ability to handle the demands of a kitchen environment while requiring minimal effort to keep clean and maintain.

Aesthetics and Style: Choosing the Perfect Flooring for Your Kitchen

When you’re choosing the ideal flooring for your kitchen, aesthetics and style, play crucial roles. The perfect flooring should seamlessly blend with your kitchen’s overall design while also meeting practical requirements. Consider options like ceramic tiles, which offer durability, easy maintenance, and a wide range of colours and patterns to suit any kitchen theme.

Hardwood floors exude warmth and elegance, though they require more maintenance. Vinyl or laminate flooring can mimic the look of wood or tile at a lower cost and with greater durability. Ultimately, you’ll want to go for flooring that complements your kitchen’s aesthetic and meets your functional needs.
